Welcome to Spacebomb.

April 29th, 2013

MATTHEW E. WHITE and the band just finished their month-long trek across Europe, and they have quite a bit to show for it, like a sold-out headlining date at London’s legendary Queen Elizabeth Hall and some fantastic press and sessions they did along the way. One article caught our attention in a special way as it paints a portrait of not just how White came to be “2013′s finest newcomer,” but also how Spacebomb was born.

“You’re only going to see the whole Spacebomb picture when it’s a collage of records”

May’s issue of Uncut Magazine, available worldwide, tells author John Mulvey’s story of dropping in on Richmond for a few days to see how Spacebomb makes it its home. White, Cameron Ralston, Pinson Chanselle, and Trey Pollard all help him understand what Spacebomb is and what people can expect from us in the future. It’s also a detailed account of White’s beginnings, from painting the studio where Missy Elliott and Timbaland frequented to his insatiable appetite for meeting those who have been a part of the golden age of recorded music, and finally to bringing to life a vision of a label that employs time-tested methods and superior musicianship to make great art that stops in interesting places.

MATTHEW E. WHITE‘s April has been action-packed, to say the least. With an itinerary full of dates across central Europe and the UK, the band even managed to fit in a few special sessions, like this one for BBC Radio 6 with Lauren Laverne. Quite fitting, as they wrap up the tour tonight in London at a long sold-out headlining show at the great Queen Elizabeth Hall. Listen to “Steady Pace” and “Big Love” above.

That’s not all. His entire set in Rotterdam, Netherlands, at Motel Mozaïque was caught on video (watch below), his taping for Other Voices (plus a solo piano version of “Gone Away” and a pub interview) are available to watch now before it airs on television in the UK, and there’s also video of the stripped-down trio performing on Belgium’s Radio 1.

UPDATE: This video of the band performing “Will You Love Me” live at the Rise Record Shop in Bristol, UK, popped up, and we think it’s a keeper. Watch on Vimeo.

Take a look at Matthew E. White’s schedule for upcoming tour dates in the U.S. and Europe.

March 21st, 2013

In 2010, MEGAFAUN, JUSTIN VERNON, and FIGHT THE BIG BULL came together to reimagine and recreate Alan Lomax’s field recordings. They called it Sounds of the South, and it was born one warm September evening at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, only to be reprised once in 2011 at MusicNOW Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio. That is, until this summer.

On June 1-2, Sounds of the South will be performed once more, this time way south at the Sydney Opera House in Australia as a part of the Vivid LIVE festival. Fight the Big Bull — which comprises MATTHEW E. WHITE, the SPACEBOMB HOUSE BAND, and many of the SPACEBOMB HORNS — will again be the presentation’s foundation as they, Megafaun, and Justin Vernon breathe new life into songs, spirituals, and work songs of yore.

Matthew E. White will also play a sideshow at Vivid LIVE as well as another date in Melbourne on June 3. See all of his tour dates here.
